It’s been a while since I updated you on Mom’s status, so here goes:
Her kidney function is dropping, slowly but steadily. It’s in the mid-teens at the moment, and when it drops to around 12%, she’ll need to go on dialysis. She wants overnight, at-home dialysis, but it looks like that won’t work, for a number of reasons. So that may mean going to the kidney clinic 3 times a week.
She’s also begun the process of being evaluated for a kidney transplant. While undergoing all of the required exams and tests, a spot was found on her lung. After several chest x-rays, a CT scan, PET scan and a biopsy, it has been determined that it’s small cell carcinoma.
We met with the oncology thoracic surgeon and a radiation oncologist just yesterday, and after considering surgery (which would require a 5-day hospital stay and possible rehab, not to mention the high risk of complications due to her poor general health) versus a targeted radiation therapy (which would require 3-4 hour long sessions and has almost no side effects), Mom chose the radiation.
I suppose we’re just focusing on the lung cancer at the moment, then we’ll see where we’re at with the kidneys.
Add to that the fact that I had Little Sis to the ER for croup on Memorial Day, plus the fact that someone (okay, today its ALL OF US, including Mom) has had this damn virus for two weeks straight, and our pediatrician visit this afternoon for a suspected ear infection, and I’m surprised I’m still standing.
In the meantime, school just finished last Friday, the soccer tournament is this weekend, the dance recital is in two weeks, Big Sis starts piano lessons today, I totally MISSED the registration for Girl Scout day camp and buying tickets for the recital…
When does this summer “vacation” start??
